FCAT Results for Monroe County

FCAT  scores have been posted on the Florida DOE Website. An Executive Summary and year-by-year comparisons have been prepared by the Office of Accountability and Assessment and are available on the MCSD Assessment web page. When individual student scores become available, parents will receive a Connect-Ed phone message inviting them to either pick up their child's scores at their school, call the school to verify their mailing address and request that the scores be mailed, or pick up the scores from the school at the start of the 2010-2011 school year.

2010 Marine Science Educator of the Year

Coral Shores High School marine science teacher Dave Makepeace has been awarded the 2010 John Beakley Marine Science Educator of the Year Award, presented by the Florida Marine Science Educators Association at their annual conference.

New Appointments Announced

Dr. Joseph Burke, Superintendent of Schools, announces the appointment of the following Monroe County School District employees:

Meri-De Mercado is appointed as Supervisor of the School Food Service and Purchasing Departments. An employee of the school district since 1998, she brings experience in contract management and the corporate franchise restaurant business, in conjunction with her district experience, to her new position.

Kayleen Watts is appointed as the Supervisor of Transportation, coming to our district from Martin County Schools where she was Transportation Operations Supervisor.

Julia Hoar is appointed as the Principal of Key Largo School.  She has been with the Monroe County School District since January 2004 as an Assistant Principal at Key Largo School.

High School Students Become International Ambassadors

Twenty Monroe County sophomores and juniors will travel abroad this summer to participate in the Experiment In International Living (EIL).  Of the twenty students, seventeen are currently enrolled in the Take Stock In Children program and were awarded grants through a four-year partnership between EIL and the Monroe County Education Foundation.

Summertime Reading Takes to the Outdoors

Summer has arrived and the Florida Department of Education (DOE) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are encouraging students to head outdoors with a book from DOE’s 2010 recommended summer reading list. The annual reading list, part of DOE’s Just Read, Florida! mission, is designed to promote nature-based literature while fostering in students an appreciation for the both reading and the outdoors.

Summer Food Service Program

The Monroe County School District will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program from June 14 through July 16, 2010.   Nutritionally balanced meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, sex, disability, age, or national origin during summer vacation when school breakfasts and lunches are not available.

Summer CampsMCSD summer school and summer rec programs begin on June 14.  In addition, Monroe County agencies, community leaders and businesses are providing summer camps and programs that will provide your child with activities, fun and educational experiences.

Commissioner's Summer Reading Adventure

The Department of Education is proud to partner with the Florida Department of State and MetaMetrics® to provide students across Florida with a fun new reading resource as part of the Commissioner’s Summer Reading Adventure. Find a Book is an interactive tool that allows students and parents to create reading lists based on their interests and reading ability.  The search tool then allows the user to locate their selected titles at local public libraries.

Public Library Looking for Teen Advisory Members

The Public Library is looking for teens in Grades 6-12 who are interested in taking an active part in the Library’s Teen Community. This team will develop and promote programs such as guest speakers, talent shows, stand up comedy, poetry slams, and dances.  Teens will also make recommendations for new materials for collection development like graphic novels and movie selections. Click here for more information.
